From raving warehouses to residential apartments
There was a time when Ancoats looked very different.
Before the coffee shops, apartment blocks, marina walks and restaurants, it was a very different part of Manchester. Back in the 1990s, I remember heading into Ancoats for nights out and taxi drivers insisted on dropping me to the front door of Sankeys.
Not many people were living there then. Fast forward a few decades and Ancoats and New Islington have become two of the most popular places to live in Manchester. The edge of town now feels like one of the city’s main residential neighbourhoods. That change has brought a lot of new homes, landlords, businesses and electrics that need looking after properly!
Ancoats Has Changed, But the Buildings Still Need Careful Work
One of the things I like about Ancoats is the mix. You’ve got modern apartment blocks, converted mills, older buildings, rental flats, small commercial spaces, cafés, studios and homes that all have very different electrical needs.
Some places are newly built and mainly need extra sockets, lighting changes, smart controls or EICR checks. Others are conversions where the building has a bit more history, awkward layouts, shared access, older wiring or fuse boards that have had years of additions and changes.
That means electrical work in this area often needs a bit more thought than a straightforward job in a standard house. It’s not just about turning up and changing a fitting. You need to think about access, parking, building management, neighbours, shared areas, landlords, tenants and how the space is actually used day to day.
Over the years, I’ve worked across everything from residential homes and commercial sites to infrastructure and long-term client projects, so I’m used to thinking practically and planning work properly.
People are working from home more. They’re using more devices. They want better lighting. They need reliable power for home offices, chargers, kitchen appliances, smart tech and everyday life.
A flat that was wired years ago may still “work”, but that doesn’t always mean it works well for how people live now. Common electrical jobs I see in Ancoats apartments include fuse board upgrades, consumer unit replacements, EICR certificates, fault finding, tripping circuits, lighting upgrades, additional sockets, smart lighting, kitchen electrical work, home office power and landlord remedial work. A lot of this work is not especially glamorous, but it makes a big difference to how safe, practical and comfortable a property feels.
Fuse Boards: The Bit I Always Check
If there is one thing I’m particular about, it’s fuse boards. That might not sound exciting to most people, but it is often the first place electrical problems show up.
A tripping fuse board, old consumer unit, poor labelling or outdated protection can cause all sorts of issues. In some cases, the fuse board simply isn’t suited to the way the property is being used now. This is especially common in older properties, converted buildings and apartments that have had extra electrical work added over time.
If your fuse board keeps tripping, looks old, still uses fuse wire or hasn’t been inspected in years, it is worth getting it checked properly. A fuse board upgrade or consumer unit replacement can make the electrical system safer, clearer and better suited to modern use. For landlords, it can also be an important part of keeping a rental property compliant.
That usually means EICR certificates, remedial electrical work, emergency repairs, lighting issues, socket faults, fuse board upgrades, tenant callouts and general maintenance. My approach is straightforward: check the issue properly, explain what’s going on, and carry out the work safely and professionally. For landlords and tenants, that makes the whole process easier.
